Description
In this two-day typography workshop, a reader with the working title “Consider the Fragment” will be developed and produced through a collaborative process. The starting point is a collection of texts on the fragment, the note, and the rehearsal.
Together, we will explore how these topics can be translated typographically and transferred into the haptic space of the book. Individually or in pairs, participants will design a section of the publication – from the cover to essays, poetry, and quotes, through to the colophon. The source material can be worked with through analogue processes, for example through photocopies/scans, collages, or other methods, or it can be digitally reworked and typeset.
At the end of the workshop, all contributions will be collated and different rhythms of page sequences will be explored. There is no predetermined chronology for the final publication. Through a special binding technique, each edition of the reader can be individually assembled.
The Fragment
“…at once self-contained, mobile and slippery, an invitation onto who-knows-what context and future.” (Brian Dillon, In Defense of the Fragment, Spike Art Magazine, Winter 24, p. 115)
The Note
“…those spontaneous phrases that cannot be repeated, too vague for anything but one’s notebook” (André Wogenscky, preface to Le Corbusier Sketchbooks, MIT Press, 1981, n. p.)
The Rehearsal
“…the goal of production is ‘joyously forgotten’” (Sabeth Buchmann, Ilse Lafer, Constanze Ruhm, Putting Rehearsals to the Test. Introduction, Sternberg Press, 2016, p. 12)
Examination Modalities
Regular attendance, assessment of practical work
