Description
The course extends over two semesters.
In the winter semester (Part 1), we will explore the fundamentals of type design. We will discuss type anatomy and terminology, legibility, rhythm, type sketching, and type selection – both theoretically and through short exercises.
A special guided tour to the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek will provide additional insights into the formal development of typefaces from the dawn of printing in Europe through the 19th century.
The aim is to develop an analog typeface design that will serve as the basis for the design of a digital text font in the summer term.
Examination Modalities
The mark will be an accumulation of attendance, contribution, learning curve and the eventual outcome.
Comments
Number of participants is limited. Course will be held in German.
Technical requirements for the summer term: basic knowledge in MacOs and own MacBook; Glyph's license is provided for the duration of the course.
