2026W, scientific seminar (SEW), 2.0 ECTS, 1.0 semester hours, course number S05593

Description

Where is the money for my research? Resources for Art and Science: What makes a project sustainably successful? What makes a strong project proposal? We will read and evaluate real proposals...

How do ideas take shape, how does one’s own practice become successful, and which perspectives emerge—individually and collectively? This course introduces the Angewandte and its shared research milieu—welcome to the Research Garden. New ideas will be discussed and developed among participants, and pathways to further support will be opened up.

This course centres on your ideas and the resources you need to turn them into future research projects—with a special emphasis on the advanced development and opening up (Erschließung) of art and science (EE) as a distinctive perspective.

We will explore how an art university can contribute something special to the academic world through artistic, scientific, and interdisciplinary research—by opening new avenues of understanding and redefining the role of universities in fostering meaningful change.

The course will guide you through research fundamentals, especially how to identify the right resources for your ideas and projects. You will learn how to craft compelling proposals and present your ideas in ways that resonate with yourself and others. We will focus on developing applications within Austria’s research landscape, with particular attention to artistic research (e.g., FWF/PEEK) and how such projects can strengthen the Angewandte’s research profile .

Depending on the composition of the participant group, the course will be held in German or English and will align with the international, interdisciplinary orientation of the Angewandte.

Info: Time an location of the course will be announced asap.

Comments

This course will grow and adapt based on your ideas, unfolding over four key sessions on specific dates.

UNIT 1: RESEARCH AT THE UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS – Welcome to the Research Garden!

What makes research at the Angewandte unique? In this introductory session, we'll get to know each other, share our interests, experiences, and perspectives, and discuss our research backgrounds and degree programmes. We’ll explore the Angewandte as a dynamic research hub, highlighting its distinctive qualities and some of the exciting funded projects underway. I’ll also outline the great opportunities available within the university and the conditions for accessing them.

UNIT 2: DEFINING CONTEXTS – Living in the Research Garden!

In this session, you’re invited to present your specific ideas, which we’ll discuss together. We’ll look at the broader context of art and research funding, both internationally and within Europe and Austria. We’ll dive deeper into the work of funding bodies, identify a model funding programme, and explore the use of templates, structuring, and resource distribution. We’ll also review the current status of your concepts.

UNIT 3: REVIEWING IDEAS – Discovering in the Research Garden!

We will read proposals and experience the review process firsthand. You will act as reviewers of real projects and discuss them; you will also get reviews. And you will learn to know how to form a decision.

UNIT 4: REVIEWING YOUR OWN IDEAS – Cultivating in the Research Garden!

Here, we’ll focus on refining your proposals and the review process. You’ll present the current state of your proposals, and we’ll address any challenges you’ve encountered while developing your concepts.

In our final part, we’ll discuss and review your proposals. Please bring printed copies to the meeting. We’ll work together to refine them, possibly determine a focus, and discuss the next steps for using the material you’ve developed.
