Beschreibung
In this course students develop ‘critical thinking’ by engaging with both art theory and art practice —whether in visual art, performance, media art, or other creative approaches— the course aims to survey the field of contemporary art. The course explores the current lexicon of art and aesthetics, and emphasizes queer feminist and decolonial perspectives that challenge existing paradigms.
As an introduction course, the semester is focused on theoretical aspects of contemporary art to understand the discourse of art today, and designed to survey different methods of artistic expression (to envision and understand artistic practice). There will be a 3-day workshop titled "Artist as Resource" which will introduce students to a case study of a collaboration between two artists and a curator during the pandemic.
Students are encouraged to visit cultural institutions and exhibitions throughout the course, but are not required to have a studio practice.
Prüfungsmodalitäten
Please note that Introduction to Artistic Strategies (Theory) with Mika Maruyama and Introduction to Artistic Strategies (Practice) with Stephanie Misa are a co-taught class for 4 ECTS credits. Please register for both classes.
