Description

This seminar introduces and discusses methods and strategies of artistic research. Its aim is to support students in developing their own artistic projects from the perspective of artistic research.

The introductory session addresses key questions in artistic research: How can artistic practice become a research process? What forms of knowledge can emerge from it, and how can these be communicated?

The seminar examines a range of methodological approaches, such as experimental methods involving new technologies, performative and participatory strategies, as well as documentary and reflective approaches. Selected examples and statements by contemporary artists will be used to analyse and discuss a broad range of positions and understandings of artistic research. Possibilities for artistic research involving digital media and immersive environments will also be addressed.

Based on their own project, students will formulate a research question in artistic research and experiment with different practical, theoretical, or hybrid methods. The presentation and discussion of these projects will accompany the seminar throughout.

Examination Modalities

  - regular and active participation   - independent contribution to discussions and collaborative exercises    - development if an indivdual project outline or conceptual exercise within the context of the seminar

Students should bring the necessary tools for independent work, ideally a pen, paper, a laptop, a smartphone, or similar devices.

 

Depending on the composition of the group, the seminar may be held in German or English.
