Experimental Strategies Integration

2026W, künstlerisches Seminar (SEK), 3.0 ECTS, 2.0 SemStd., LV-Nr. S03926

Beschreibung

The course does not focus on the development of the architectural proposal itself, but on the exploration of the methods through which that proposal is investigated, represented, communicated, and critically reflected upon. Working alongside their pre-diploma studio project, students develop an individual approach to architectural representation that supports and enriches their design process.

Within the subject group Instrumentarium, representation is understood as an active mode of inquiry rather than the production of final presentation material. Drawings, diagrams, physical models, photography, film, animation, mapping, storytelling, installations, computational media, and other experimental forms of representation are explored as tools for thinking, testing, and communicating architectural ideas. Students are encouraged to question conventional modes of architectural representation and to develop techniques that are appropriate to the conceptual ambitions of their own projects.

The seminar provides a space for experimentation across analogue and digital media. Through iterative making and critical discussion, students investigate how different representational strategies reveal spatial, environmental, material, social, and experiential qualities that might otherwise remain invisible. The emphasis is on developing a personal visual and conceptual language rather than mastering a predetermined set of techniques.

The objective is to help students establish a coherent and individual method of communicating architecture. By the end of the semester, each student will have developed a representation strategy that not only communicates their project with clarity and precision but also contributes to the way they think about architecture itself.

Prüfungsmodalitäten

The course begins with an introductory session, followed by bi-weekly individual consultations. Students are expected to continuously develop and refine their representational methods in parallel with the evolution of their studio project. Progress is discussed through individual reviews, a mid-semester presentation, and a final presentation.

Active participation in critiques is essential. Reviews focus on the development of representational strategies and methods of communication rather than on the architectural design itself. Students are expected to present work in progress, engage in critical discussion, and contribute constructively to the collective learning environment.

Anmerkungen

As part of this first meeting, each student will give a 5-minute presentation introducing a selection of previous work that best represents their individual practice and interests as an architect, designer, artist, or maker. The presentation may include projects developed during previous semesters at the Angewandte, undergraduate work, professional practice, or independent creative projects. Its purpose is to introduce each student’s creative background, interests, and methods of working, while providing a point of departure for the development of an individual representation strategy throughout the semester.
