JOSEF FRANK - WORKER´S COLONY ORTMANN
A Tool for Applied Democracy in the Exchange Between Center and Periphery
The Ortmann Workers’ Colony, designed by Josef Frank, represents a significant historical and architectural legacy. Josef Frank, one of the most important Austrian architects of the 20th century, was a professor at the Angewandte—formerly the School of Applied Arts. Not only did he design iconic villas, furniture, and textiles; he also conceived the entire Ortmann Workers’ Colony and, at its center, the Volksheim, as its cultural heart. To this day, the Volksheim serves as an event venue and hub for community organizations. Questions: How can education and culture be revitalized as tools for democratic governance? How can a productive exchange between urban and rural areas be achieved?
Examination Modalities
The course lasts two semesters. Attendance, active participation and the development of an individual artistic work or participation in a group process are taken into account for grading.
