The course ZKF - Conservation and Restoration Practice is the center of the Conservation and Restoration course at the Angewandte. Students work with originals right from the start. In the third semester, students choose their specialization (painting, textile, object, stone, software, archaeological finds). This is followed in the fourth year by a preliminary diploma, an internship semester at home or abroad and, in the fifth year, an artistic-scientific diploma thesis dedicated to a current conservation research question.

In addition to restoration practice, interdisciplinary cooperation with humanities scholars and natural scientists is trained and analyses and investigations are carried out. The ZKF is a one-to-one course, whereby the individual interests and level of knowledge of each student are taken into account as far as possible. The systematic methodical approach to conservation and restoration as well as critical and contextualizing thinking and action are taught. Practice is supplemented by targeted theoretical input and self-study. At the end of the semester, a written and photographic documentation of the respective project is produced.

Objectives and content: adequate and safe handling of objects (handling, transportation, storage, presentation), development and training of practical skills in conservation and restoration, strategy development and conservation management for collections and monuments, risk assessment, interdisciplinary and multicultural teamwork, scientific and critical work, green skills, improvisation skills in different working environments, presentation and argumentation skills, the sustainable connection between theory and practice, ethical issues and critical reflection on the relevance of cultural heritage conservation in the present.
