Di., 28. April 2026, 14:00–18:00, „Lecture by Robert Gabris: "Between the Gaze and Self-Representation: Romani in History, Visual Culture, and Artistic Practice" In this presentation, I will examine how the Romn*ja community has been represented in the European context, considering both historical and contemporary perspectives. I aim to analyze and critically question the narratives that have shaped these representations. Many of the narratives that persist today, as well as the historiography produced by dominant societies, reflect a Eurocentric gaze that positions us as “the Others” within racialized frameworks. In response, I position my own perspective: that of a Rom who turns this societal gaze back on itself and reflects from within the experiences and viewpoints of the Romnja community. In the first part of the presentation, I will focus on art books, photography, and documentary works, through which we can trace a visual and discursive genealogy of how the community has been represented. Along the way, I will highlight several key historical milestones, as well as important achievements, forms of resistance, and the contemporary socio-political situation of Romn*ja. In the second part, I will present my own artistic practice and my discursive engagement with Romn*ja identity, primarily through the mediums of drawing, performance, and collective installation. I will also introduce other artistic positions that engage with similar themes and question dominant representations and narratives. Disclaimer on Terminology: This lecture refers to the community as Romn*ja or Romani. Terms such as Z* or G* are historical slurs and will only appear with a strike-through, making their presence visible while disrupting them. This highlights their racist history without normalizing them, keeping the focus on respectful language and the community’s perspective. Biography Robert Gabris: Robert Gabris was born in Slovakia and currently lives and works in Vienna as a freelance artist. He earned his B.A. from the Academy of Applied Arts in Bratislava in 2010 and his Diploma (Mag.art.) from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 2014. His work critically explores fluid and changeable identity through drawing and experimental performance, employing deconstruction and a continuous interrogation of boundaries. Rooted in autobiographical narratives, his practice reflects an obsessive concern with proportion and symmetry, navigating the tension between self-identity and societal projections. Central to his work is a commitment to resisting exclusion and confronting systemic racism, while examining the fluidity of identity within patriarchal frameworks and the existence of the queer body across diverse physical and emotional experiences. Gabris has participated in numerous international exhibitions, including the Autostrada Biennale in Kosovo and the OFF-Biennale in Budapest (2025). In 2024, his work was featured at the biennales in Sydney and Lyon, as well as in Avantgarde and Liberation at mumok, Vienna. In 2023, his work was shown at Belvedere 21, Vienna, and in 2022 at Documenta Fifteen, Kassel. Earlier, in 2020, his pieces were included in Insectopia at Villa Romana, Florence, and at the Bergen Assembly.“
