Institute of Architecture , Institute of Architecture
2026S, Practical Exercises (UE), 3.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S05915
Description
The subject of the semester-long exercise is to deal with an existing design of somebody else under altered conditions — i.e. with design decisions made already by somebody else and therefore representing another architectural approach. At the same time the transformation of a design of one’s own by somebody else is experienced.
Awareness of all other projects and their transformation is part of the study experience; so for the full time of the first and second meetings the participation of all students is obligatory, for the third meeting it is recommended.
1st meeting, Monday, 02.03., 09:00-12:15
a) Each participating student will bring an earlier project selected from his or her previous studies and give a concise explanatory introduction to it.
b) The projects presented will be passed on to the next student in a rotation procedure. Appropriate conditions for the transformation are discussed.
2nd meeting, Monday, 16.03., 09:00-12:15
c) Each student presents the project taken over and describes it from his or her view, also bringing forward advantages and disadvantages recognized or expected.
d) The original author of the project comments on this statement and answers questions.
e) After preliminary attempts conditions and the brief of the transformation are fixed.
3rd meeting, Monday, 13.04., 09:00-12:15
f) First presentation of the transformation design. The original author gives his or her view.
Further meetings, Monday, 27.04 / 11.05 / 08.06., 09:00-12:15
g) Steps of the transformation design, until completion.
Final meeting, Monday, 22.06., 09:00-12:15
h) Presentation of the transformed project.
Examination Modalities
Each student is bound to actively develop an attitude towards design decisions made by others; each student also experiences passively a subsequent intervention by somebody else.
The confrontation with a foreign design hence is occurring in both directions; therefore, and also to gain this experience by observing other projects, the full time of the first two introductory meetings and the final meeting shall be attended by all students.
During the other meetings, participation throughout the entire time is recommended, but not mandatory.
Comments
In addition to the dates listed above, there will be follow-up meetings on a smaller scale.
The number of places available for participation in the exercises is limited. All interested students will be informed about the selection process in advance of the start of the exercise.
The course will be held in English.
