Description
This lecture + workshop addresses and analyzes the colonial power of visuality and the fundamental dialectics of anti-colonial filmmaking to counter the imperialist violence of and in the image. The cinematic practices we look at are primarily grounded in Algerian (film) history of national liberation but stretch beyond geographical and temporal limits in line with the Tricontinental, Panafrican and internationalist networks of the filmmakers themselves.
While the lecture parts will provide the students with fundamental knowledge and context of these histories, the workshops give opportunity to question and sharpen our (mental) eyes and thus the ways we see, analyze, and criticize moving images.
