Description
The practice-based seminar explores the intersections between theatre and film. Nearly every second contemporary stage production makes use of video and filmic aesthetic techniques. Theatre thus becomes a hybrid art form, and so-called video-design emerges as an independent genre. In this seminar, we focus on the use of live on-stage cameras in combination with theatrical scenes. Working in small groups (approximately 4–6 students), participants develop theatrical scenes or a short theatre piece and realize them in a video-theatrical format. Following a brief theoretical overview of the use of video in theatre, handheld camera exercises are conducted. Subsequently, the short theatre piece or theatrical scene is planned and produced. Within the working groups, students rotate between the roles of acting, directing, and camera operation.
Examination Modalities
There is no examination in this seminar; however, regular attendance and the development of at least one video-theatrical scene are required.
