2026S, artistic Seminar (SEK), 2.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S05600
Description
This semester, students will work along a continuous production chain from recording to spatial installation. The course begins with an introduction to recording studio technology, focusing on multichannel and ambisonics as formats for three-dimensional sound imaging. In addition, Dante will be introduced as an audio-over-IP connection in order to understand and practically utilise the signal paths and routing between the recording studio and the Immersive Lab.
Using their own sound recordings, either in Ambisonics format or as mono recordings, students will then develop a spatial composition in the studio. The focus is on spatial design elements such as positioning, movement, depth gradation, perspective, density and dramaturgy in space – with the aim of formulating a clear spatial idea or an audible concept.
In the second part, this spatial composition is transferred to the Immersive Lab and implemented there as an installation. An 8-channel audio system is used to translate the work into a concrete spatial situation: the arrangement of loudspeakers and the adaptation of the composition to the real listening space become part of the creative process. The result is a spatial audio installation that traces the path from the technical basis (Ambisonics/Dante) to the artistic spatial composition and the immersive presentation.
Examination Modalities
Assessment is based on active participation and the creation of an artistic-technical concept for a spatial audio work or installation.
- Active participation (ongoing): regular attendance, collaboration in technical units (studio/immersive lab), preparation and implementation of tasks (recording, routing/signal flow, spatial mixing, setup/testing in the lab), constructive contributions in feedback and presentation phases.
- Concept (submission): written and/or sketchy elaboration of a spatial sound idea as the basis for implementation. The concept describes the source material (Ambisonics or mono), artistic intention, spatial dramaturgy (position/movement/layering), technical planning (format, channel/routing considerations, transfer to the Immersive Lab) and setup requirements (16-channel setup, spatial reference, test plan).
Assessment criteria: comprehensibility and clarity of the spatial idea, connection between artistic intention and technical implementation, ability to reflect during the work process, as well as reliability and cooperation during the course.
