Building Construction B

Andreas Körner
Institute of Architecture , Building Construction
2026S, scientific seminar (SEW), 3.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S05588

Description

This seminar investigates the building envelope as a dynamic system—considered as skin, shell, membrane, screen, and boundary. Students will examine its thermal, structural, and ecological functions, with particular attention to the envelope’s dual role as both ornate boundary and interstitial environment. This semester emphasises material transformation over time, with a focus on weathering processes, particularly those driven by water. Rather than avoiding these changes, students will explore how they can inform design, influence construction strategies, and generate novel aesthetic outcomes.

Through case studies and research-led investigations, students will study how building envelopes mediate between interior and exterior environments, how surfaces are articulated, and how they evolve. The seminar emphasises the thoughtful integration of non-human agents, the careful design of interfaces, precise documentation, and constructible solutions.

In accordance with the specific semester theme, students will analyse, critique, and design building envelopes that balance environmental, structural, and aesthetic considerations. Lectures, case studies, and hands-on projects will cultivate critical thinking about the lifecycle and environmental impact of envelopes while promoting practical application in design studio work.

The seminar consists of 3 parts:

1) Lectures (Weathering, Materials, Bio-integration)

2) Case study collection and analysis

2.1) A building devoid of weathering in Vienna

2.2) Innovative weathering construction in Vienna

2.3) Interesting, weathered buildings in Vienna

3) Apply the acquired knowledge by analysing and then transforming case studies to integrate weathering as a design factor.
