Description
Donna Haraway's Staying with the Trouble: Making Kin in the Chthulucene, published in 2016, is already a classic in cultural studies. In this study, which has been widely received in science, art, and literature, Haraway presents her theses on the coexistence of humans and more than human beings on Earth and discusses new forms of living together (e.g., kinship instead of biological descent). Her references range from the history of science to biographical anecdotes to science fiction (including Ursula LeGuin).
This semester, we will read Haraway's book together, contextualize her theses in feminist science and technology studies, and discuss her proposals for a better future.
Examination Modalities
Regular attendance in class (80%) is non-negotiable. For passing the course, students will be responsible for one session (possibly in a group), preparing the respective text in advance, clarifying terminology and concepts, formulating questions and leading the class discussion. The final grade will consist of active class room participation, thorough preparation of all readings (not only the presentation) as well as a short resume at the end of the seminar (about 2 pages).
Comments
Students are welcome to read Haraway in a language of their choosing. The seminar is open to students preferring to discuss in English. Everyone, however, should be able to follow the discussion in German. The number of participants is limited to 20. Registration will take place in the first session.
