Description

VISUAL CASE STUDIES 2 – MUSICAL

Objective: Further development of one's own artistic practice using newly developed methods of analysis and research. Students create visual vignettes: analogue and digital ‘microformats’ such as sketches and scribbles, short moving images, bits & pixels, memes, GIFs, stories, audios.

The course focuses on our approach to visuality, a multi-perspective examination of the visual. Whose gaze is directed at what? For what purpose, in what way, and through which media?

We observe case studies from the real world, from our shared everyday culture to the operating system of art: visual documents, artefacts, artistic production and display.

We also consider images that are familiar to us from the internet, television, advertising and games, which accompany our everyday lives and thus help to shape our identities – this academic year, the case studies are from the fields of musicals and music films, as well as choreography and movement in the visual arts. The transcultural and transmedial moving images are analysed on the basis of fundamental methodological approaches. The main focus is on ‘reading’ the respective thematic representations from the image and jointly developing a critical ‘close looking’ approach.

From the Frankfurt School to Frank N. Furter: We draw our methodological tools from critical theory, visual studies, gender studies and postcolonial theory.

The seminar is classified as ‘Grundlagen bildnerischen Arbeitens’.

As part of the course, two practical sessions will take place in a dance studio with a musical theatre coach. Attendance at these sessions is mandatory.
