Immersive Medien & Virtuelle Realität
Mel E. Logan
Institute of Fine Arts and Media Art, Digital Arts
2026S, artistic Seminar (SEK), 2.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S05466
Description
The course is a hybrid, multimedia step into experimental immersive media practices and how they shape our perception of space and environment. Immersive Media & Virtual Reality is a workshop-style investigation—a hands-on exploration of immersive technologies and artistic methods spanning different media histories.
The course centers on experimentation, supported by selected theoretical inputs for inspiration. We will work with image, sound, space, movement, and interaction across physical, virtual, and hybrid environments. Expanding beyond the classroom, the course includes externalization at the Donaukanal, working with a mobile projector to situate immersive media experiments in public space.
With the development of the new Immersive Lab, equipped with surround sound, immersive video, and four-wall projection, we go even deeper into immersive practices. Students will experiment with camera systems, 3D scanning, sound processing, and audiovisual environments. Embodied approaches are central, including work with a full-body tracking suit, enabling spatial, performative, and responsive media systems.
The course provides a foundation to expand individual expertise and artistic research, encouraging critical, technical, and creative exploration of immersive media as an evolving artistic field.

The course is ideal for those interested in sound, music technology, electronic arts, and immersive spatial design. The multidisciplinary lecture is a basis, a model to build on for your individual expertise and interests to be expanded. Let's prototype experimental modes of immersive worlds, real-time sound environments, and expanded media performance. Those interested in media as an interactive and extroverted experience are here at home.
