Beschreibung

In this course, we will look at the foundations of digital art and the strategies employed in its creation, dissemination, and presentation. The class will primarily be comprised of lectures, in-class discussions and assignments, and (possible) excursions. Readings will be provided and a full list will be presented on the first day of class. Some preparation before the first class is needed, please keep an eye on your Angewandte email for more details.

Expect that you will be required to:

- create artistic work

- effectively communicate the intentions and aims of your work created for this class

- read and apply the texts supplied in class

Attendance, if possible, is highly recommended. Punctuality is highly appreciated; you will be notified by email when we start with a "soft" start time.

Prüfungsmodalitäten

The course will be evaluated by participation, participation in the course evaluation, and a final presentation of your work. Participation in the class can be achieved in a number of ways, including attendance, communication with the tutor, communication with your peers, in-person and virtual presentation methods, and more.

Grading information:

The following are meant as guidelines and to provide insight into the thinking behind grading. We can get into a whole philosophical conversation about how difficult it is to grade creative work and thinking, maybe we can do that in class. But for your reference, here are some of the criteria I use when deciding what numerical grade to give for my classes:

1: Top mark for exceptional performance.  Exceptional performance is characterized by (some or all) of the following: creating a full, exhibition-ready work of technical and conceptual proficiency; strong participation and/or class leadership; articulate written or verbal arguments not created by AI, with references demonstrating strong knowledge of contemporary (digital) art.

2: Very good mark for quality performance. Quality performance is characterized by (some or all) of the following: creating work which has technical and conceptual strength; strong participation; articulate written or verbal arguments not formulated by AI, with references demonstrating good knowledge of contemporary (digital) art.

3: Good mark for average performance. Average performance is characterized by (some or all) of the following: creating work which meets and in some aspects shows creativity beyond the guidelines; attending and participating in class; good written or verbal arguments which are not obviously formulated by AI.

4: Sufficient mark. Sufficient performance is characterized by (some or all) of the following: creating work which meets the guidelines but goes no further; attending with infrequent participation; written or verbal arguments which are not obviously formulated by AI.

5: Insufficient mark for below average performance. Insufficient marks may be granted for any of the following reasons: obvious use of AI to complete written work; one session or more of unexplained non-attendance (arrangements and accommodations can always be made, but "silent" non-attendance is not acceptable); creating work which does not follow the guidelines given by the tutor.

Notes on use of AI: Some students use AI as part of their creative practice -- this is always OK. Use of AI to generate entire word salad paragraphs is not welcome. Use of AI to edit, translate to English from your native tongue, and check grammar is always OK. Writing is a skill, and it's important to practice this, which is why I add this stipulation. Will I always be able to tell if you generated an entire response or piece of writing with AI? Probably 5 times out of 10. So you might get away with it, but the one who loses out is yourself. It's such a losing battle that perhaps there will be no written assignment in this class but if there is such an assignment, this is the guideline.

Anmerkungen

If there is any reason why you cannot participate physically in classes or in an excursion, for example, you must travel with a companion animal (and we visit a place where companion animals are not allowed), mobility limitation, or other concern, please email me in advance with information so that I can try to  accommodate your needs.
