Scientific bachelor seminar for teacher education
Description
Teaching, silences, epistemologies: an all-ears practical seminar
Within the negative dialectics of western modernity, silence often equals “not having a voice,” and therefore figures as expressing a subject’s lack of political agency. While imposed silencing can (and no doubt does) limit and exclude humans (and more-than-humans) from political participation, attuning to different, other forms of silences can render alternate agentialities perceptible. Silence can, as Tina M. Campt (2017) suggests, express a refusal to have one’s subjectivity seized by dominant, classificatory logics. It can, as Theo Ferreira Gomes and Kosmas Phan Ðinh (2025) propose, help dismantle binaries of sounding and non-sounding, of visibility and invisibility, in collaborative listening practices.
In this seminar, we will practice-experiment with these suggestions in the context of Angewandte as a teaching and learning institution. What silences do we encounter in Angewandte classes? What dominant epistemologies figure in them? What else can they render palpable to us? How can attuning to these silences help us “connect with invisible communities, social movements, and voices from the underground” (Ferreira Gomes and Ðinh 2025)? And what other, alternate forms of learning and teaching could they possibly help us develop – playfully and in collaboration?"
Over the course of five set sessions, you are invited to both study and teach. In three sessions in March, you will participate in workshops and a game facilitated by Kosmas Phan Ðinh, Theo Ferreira Gomes, Marshall Paul and Kristina Pia Hofer, in which you will plan your own course. In the two April sessions, you will teach a pilot version of this course.
Examination Modalities
Attendance, reading the assigned literature, active participation in class (during workshops, group work, discussions) and the facilitiation/teaching of your pilot class on 20. and 21. of April. You will further be asked to document the planning and application process of your course.
