2026S, Lecture with Practical Exercises (VU), 2.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S05272
Description
This course is aimed at students with sufficient experience in screen printing and a deeper interest in fiber-related dyes!
Using small projects, printing/painting with fiber-affinous dyes, white etching (printing with bleach) and etching with vat dyes on natural fibers is taught.
Preparing the screen, Preparation of printing/discharge pastes for cotton/linen and silk/wool, printing or painting with dyes/etches, fixing and washing.
Printing/painting with dyes and discharge printing is a time-consuming and resource-intensive technique for students who need the pure fabric touch for their projects. The printing/discharge base is washed out after fixing and only the pure dyes remain in the fabric. This means that the fabric feel is completely retained and the dyes mix by overprinting. Particularly recommended for clothing and upholstery fabrics. (In contrast, textile printing with pigments changes the fabric touch because the pastes "sit" on the fibers)
Please keep this in mind when registering!
When it comes to learning the technique of screen printing or printing textiles conventionally, pigment printing is the simpler and, above all, much faster method! Please register for my current course “Textile screen printing with experimental application” for this purpose.
Examination Modalities
The commitment to learning the technique and the creative implementation with all the possibilities inherent in this textile printing technique are assessed. The careful and professional handling of the equipment is also very important.
Finally, a digital documentation (PDF File) of the project must be sent to evelyn.grill@uni-ak.ac.at
