Description

Light Design: draft, execute, experience, repeat

This exercise is meant to give you a head start in your professional encounters to come. Light design is a skill that needs to be trained, like swimming or cooking. It needs time and dedication to develop, and it has to be experienced. Which means you can't just visualize a picture and leave the rest to others. Of course, there is very important work to be done before even setting a foot inside a venue, but light design is, as everything in the scenic arts, a social process too. From the people you are imagining for, to those you are imagining with, to the ones breathing life into these imaginations. For your work to succeed, you need to master the preparation and the execution. This course is going to help you do so.

It is going to disclose the lightdesign possibilities provided by fixtures used in scenic work. We are going to train our comparative understanding of scenic architecture with light plots of different detail levels and bring all of that together in designing the light for a specific scene, which I will provide in the course's first part, on paper.

These conceptions (or misconceptions) will be put to the test in the second part. Where you are going to manage a so-called light rehearsal in Schauspiel Haus Wien. You are going to work with a real technician, and this is providing you with the task of communicating your concepts to someone who is not aware of them or has a different approach to scenic work than you and all of that, while the clock is ticking.
