Andrea Hesse
Institute of Art and Technology, Studio Book and Paper
2026S, Lecture with Practical Exercises (VU), 2.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S05187

Description

An insight into the fundamentals of book design—what a book is and what it can do, and what design possibilities it offers. The various aspects of book design are explored through examples and exercises.

The design exercises can be completed either in analogue or digital form.

It is recommended to attend the follow-up course “Book Design: Type, Book, Paper – Methods.”

Both courses take place on Wednesday mornings every other week, alternating with each other.

Examination Modalities

Continuous attendance and active participation in the course. The exercises produced individually or collaboratively during the course form part of the assessment and will be evaluated at the end of the semester.

Comments

Lectures and exercises take place in one of the available seminar rooms as well as in the Book & Paper workshop. More extensive projects may be continued outside of class. In principle, however, all work submitted for assessment at the end of the semester must have been supervised by me beforehand.

Limited number of participants.
