The class follows a chronological structure. After the focus in WiSe on the process of creating a painting, in the SoSe we think about (the) painting in context. From titles, documentation and writing about painting, to exhibition making, we will test attributions of meaning and question the professional field. What happens with the finished piece? How can exhibition making contribute to the discourse of the medium? What are the practical implications of practicing painting as a profession?

The lecture gives an introduction to historical and contemporary objectives of painting and the related technical approaches. In the practical part of the course, the application of those techniques aims not only to enhance the painterly repertoire of the students, but also to reflect the possibilities of representation within the medium, above all in relation to the students' individual practices.

The number of participants is limited for reasons of space. Students of the Painting and Animation Film department will be ranked first, as this is a compulsory course for them.
