2026S, Project Work (PA), 5.0 ECTS, 3.0 semester hours, course number S05153

Description

The jointly taught seminar by Jan Svenungsson and Olga Grjasnowa focuses on the combination of images and text. Students will learn about the history, different types and functions of children's and young adult literature. We will look at many examples of these works: successful and less successful, beautiful and garish, historical and contemporary, literary works and non-fiction, and, last but not least, different pedagogical approaches. However, the seminar will focus on the students' own production of a children's or young adult book as a joint project.

The seminar also revolves around the following questions: Which works actually count as children's and young adult literature? How did it come about and what role does it fulfil? How do authors and illustrators work together, how do text and images influence each other? How do children's book publishers work? And what does children's literature say about a society? What expectations are placed on the next generations and what images shape us?

Examination Modalities

The seminar focuses on the students' own production of a children's or young adult book. Working in small groups, the students are to develop a dummy or concept for this book. The aim is to explore the interplay between text and images. The jointly produced works can take a wide variety of forms, from traditional children's books to experimental works. Individual projects are also possible.

Regular attendance is required.
