Katharina Fuchs
Institute of Conservation, Institute of Conservation
2026S, Lecture (VO), 1.0 ECTS, 1.0 semester hours, course number S04854

Description

The aim of the lecture is to convey the fundamentals of time-bound surface design of sculptures and buildings with regard to materiality (inherent color) and/or additional polychromy (applied finish). The goal is to sharpen the understanding of the significance of respective design mediums (materiality and/or polychromy) from antiquity to the early 20th century and to interpret possible historical changes. In detail, the development of Central European art from the Renaissance to Historicism will be presented. The conservation survey, including scientific examinations, serves as a basis for insights into architectural and sculptural coloration. These insights will be deepened through individual case studies.

Examination Modalities

Written short report/essay of existing colour or surface design of a selected façade or sculpture (group) in Vienna (approx. 2 A4 pages without pics). Submit either on the last day of class, June 29, 2026, or on August 31, 2026.

Comments

The lecture is tailored to the diploma study programme of conservation.  In addition to individual material-specific features within the history of art and culture, the procedure for further examinations of polychromy on sculptures or façades is explained.
