Context

The Vienna-based association SUBOTRON, the New York–based non-profit Games for Change (G4C) and the Belvedere Museum are joining forces for the first time in spring 2026 to organise events at Austrian universities, where students will create playable prototypes of digital games that not only entertain, but are inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) – games that show how technology can shape the future and how artistic heritage can be brought to life interactvely.

Participating in the global G4C Student Challenge, students will have the opportunity to submit their visionary games to the annual competition, demonstrating Austria's excellence in STEM education and artistic, multimedia fields on the world stage. Students expand their technical skills, strengthen their social competencies, and build a portfolio that demonstrates their creativity, critical thinking, innovative power, and sense of social responsibility.

In cooperation with Belvedere, one of the oldest museums in the world and a venue for contemporary art, students have the option of developing a prototype based on Austria's artistic heritage as a source of inspiration under the title ‘PLAYING ART’. Belvedere's open content programme gives them access to extensive data for developing game elements, level designs and narratives.
