2026S, artistic Seminar (SEK), 4.0 ECTS, 4.0 semester hours, course number S03411
Description
4 ECTS, weekly on Fridays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
GLASS: Creative Fusion.
We will be continuing with our exploration of GLASS this semester, this time in cooperation with Ursula Gaisbauer/Site-Specific Art.
Importantly, this time we will be experimenting with three techniques of the kiln-formed glass process in order to understand glass products, create sculptural objects in glass and communicate glass.
+ Inspiration, research and first ideas:
You will be invited to participate in a site visit to a glass-making studio and following this to a contemporary glass gallery. Marvel at the variety of possibilities for working with the mystical material GLASS and let yourself be inspired. Research and decide on a technique (casting, fusing or pâte de verre). Share your research with the group at the Raum für Nachhaltigkeit on 24 April 2026, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
+ Artistic Project - exploring design product or sculpture options
Develop a glass object using the technique of your choice and experiment with its implementation. Hands-on sessions take place at Paulusplatz 5 where the Department of Site-Specific Art (Ursula Gaisbauer) and the Department of Sculpture and Space will provide their glass kiln and workshop spaces for this purpose. Michaela Martinek and Ursula Gaisbauer will be available to support the artistic project process.
+ Artistic Project - documenting design service
Develop a User Manual based on your knowledge and the experiences you have gained during this process. The target audience for this User Manual should be students at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, e.g. the future users of the glass kiln. Present your artistic project process, including the technique you have chosen in this User Manual and include your personal response to the process as well as any objective advice you can give to future users of the glass kiln.
We will celebrate the Creative Fusion of this holistic experience at the Angewandte Festival on 3 July 2026.
Examination Modalities
The criteria for assessing an Artistic Project are:
+ Continuous work on an artistic design process (4ECTS x 25hours)
+ Weekly exchange within the group (15 weeks / artistic seminar/continuous assessment).
+ One-to-one as required and by personal agreement (see kick-off)
+ Documentation/User Manual: all contributions will be collected in an A5 box (Buch & Papier) . According to the new DEX guidelines, your documentation material will be uploaded by the course coordinator to BASE.
+ Optionally, you also have the opportunity to present your Artistic Project at the Angewandte Festival.
