Description
Theatre as social practice
Aesthetic strategies between performance, politics and the public sphere for contemporary theatre
This course examines theatre as a cultural practice in the context of social, political and economic challenges and explores the question of what role theatre and the performing arts in general still play – and could play – in a rapidly changing society. The focus is on analysing how theatre responds to social, political and cultural upheavals and what strategies it develops in order not to lose relevance. What role can theatre play today as a place of critical public discourse?
The aim is to rethink theatre not only as an aesthetic practice, but also as a medium for social reflection. The discussion will focus in particular on aesthetic features that operate beyond established theatre conventions and blur the boundaries between disciplines such as theatre, performance, dance, visual arts and digital media. Another aim is to analyse and critically reflect on contemporary artistic practices and aesthetic strategies in the field of (independent) performing arts. In addition, networking and a culture of discussion among students will be promoted.
