The course ZKF – Conservation-Restoration Practice / Individual Artistic Instruction (abbreviated: ZKF) forms the core of the conservation and restoration program at the University of Applied Arts. In ZKF, students work exclusively on original objects. Attendance is mandatory.

From the second year onwards, students choose one or more areas of specialization (paintings, textiles, objects, stone, archaeological finds, software conservation). The fourth year is followed by a preliminary diploma, a practical semester in Austria or abroad, and in the fifth year, an artistic-scientific diploma thesis dedicated to a current conservation science research question or a complex practical challenge.

In addition to restoration practice, interdisciplinary cooperation with the cultural and natural sciences is trained and promoted. The individual interests and level of knowledge of each student are addressed as best as possible (individual instruction). The systematic methodological approach to conservation and restoration as well as critical and contextual thinking and action are taught. Practical project work is supplemented by targeted theoretical input and self-study.

Goals and content: adequate and safe handling of objects (handling, transport, storage, presentation), training in practical skills in conservation and restoration, development of research questions, strategy development and conservation management for collections and monuments, risk assessment, conservation management plan, interdisciplinary and multicultural teamwork, scientific and critical work, green skills, improvisation skills in different working environments, presentation and argumentation skills, the sustainable combination of theory and practice, ethical issues, and critical reflection on the relevance of cultural heritage preservation in the present day.

The following will be assessed:

- Practical performance (ongoing)

- Written documentation (at the end of the semester)

- Final oral presentation (at the end of the semester)

- Initiative in self-study (ongoing)

- Active participation in class plenary sessions (twice a month)

- Communication and critical reflection (ongoing)

- Positioning in the field of work and research (gradual)

Classes take place every Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the classroom.
