Subversive stitches, narrating needles?

The English verb to stitch encompasses both sewing – the joining of two pieces of fabric – and embroidery, the decorative work with threads. In this seminar, we will explore this practice, which at its core can be traced back to a simple act: a needle with thread piercing a soft material.

The seminar considers stitching as both language and artistic expression, bringing together theoretical reflection and practical work. At the center are the students’ own artistic projects, developed and discussed collectively. Alongside this, we will carry out practical experiments and read excerpts from foundational texts such as The Subversive Stitch. We will also look at artistic positions in which stitching plays a central role, such as the work of Britta Marakatt-Labba, Majd Abdel Hamid, Tau Lewis, Louise Bourgeois, Lenke Rothman, and the Feministische Handwerk Partij, among others.

The seminar is open to all who wish to engage with stitching as cultural practice, context, content, or reference within their own practice, regardless of prior experience.

Consistent and active participation, development of an artistic project, presentation as part of the DEX semester presentations, and submission of a digital short documentation.
