2025W, Introductory Seminar (PS), 2.0 ECTS, 1.0 semester hours, course number S05827
Description
Ghosts and demons, long thought exorcised from science, continue to haunt the edges of theoretical physics. While the supernatural has been proudly dismissed from rational inquiry, such figures often reappear—as metaphors, thought experiments, or conceptual placeholders—especially in moments when scientific paradigms encounter the unexplained. From the zombie-like ambiguity of Schrödinger’s Cat to the “spooky action at a distance” of quantum entanglement, these concepts have helped scientists grapple with the unfamiliar and the unintuitive.
In this seminar, we will explore how these ghosts and demons function in theory-building, acting as cognitive tools during moments of foundational uncertainty.
