Die Arbeit an Gleichwertigkeit: Diskriminierungskritische Zugänge zur Kunst

Institute of Studies in Art and Art Education, Transcultural Studies
2025W, scientific seminar (SEW), 2.0 ECTS, 1.0 semester hours, course number S05813

Gender/diversity/queer-specific

Description

This seminar is aimed at Master's students who wish to engage more deeply with issues of diversity and the mechanisms of discrimination within the arts. Central questions include: For whom do we create art – and with whom? Who remains invisible in our narratives, institutions, and on our stages? And how can we develop working methods that are critically aware of power, sensitive to difference, and less violent?

Drawing on an intersectional understanding of diversity, the seminar introduces theoretical foundations as well as artistic and activist approaches that address structural inequality, questions of representation, and epistemic violence. The Tetrahedron Model developed by Ivana Pilić (Pilić 2024) serves as a practice-oriented tool that interweaves theory, political and artistic practice, and experiential knowledge. It supports the development of discrimination-critical strategies and opens up new perspectives on artistic production and mediation processes.

In addition to joint readings and discussions of key texts, the focus will be on analyzing concrete projects committed to social justice and equity. Through examples from visual arts, performance, film, and curatorial practices, we will explore how stories are told, perspectives made visible, and structures transformed. The goal is not merely to understand diversity as a concept, but to embed it as an active stance within one’s own practice.

Examination Modalities

1. Learning Journal (50%)
Students are expected to keep an individual learning journal that documents their learning process throughout the semester. The journal should include reflections on key concepts and themes, personal insights, questions, moments of irritation, and connections to their own artistic, theoretical, or activist practice.

2. Final Reflection Paper (50%)
Based on the learning journal, students write a final reflection paper (approx. 2–3 pages) in which they explore a self-chosen aspect of the seminar in greater depth. The focus should be on linking theoretical concepts with their own stance and practice, and on critically engaging with questions of diversity, power relations, and possibilities for transformation within the cultural field
