Description
What expectations do we as the audience/public and also as artists and media professionals have of genres such as interviews and portraits? What rules do we face as interviewers, but also as interviewees? Artists such as Adam Pendleton, Natascha Sadr Haghighian and mandla rae question the conventions of these genres in their works and reject expectations with their queer and anti-racist counter-designs and performances - with regard to the question of self-representation and representation of others and the normative politics often associated with this. What does it mean, for example, when I am addressed as a representative of a specific group or nation? Which topics are left out of public discourse and what effects does this have on a critical public? We will look at current artistic works, artistic strategies and politics and work out the questions and topics with the help of cultural studies texts. The seminar will focus on video and performance art. Examination Modalities
The artistic works inspire the analysis of the scientific texts and provide interpretations for a contextualization of the issues raised in the texts. This involves an analysis of both the text and the work - which includes content, aesthetic and formal aspects. Participants with different levels of knowledge can take part in the course. The seminar will be held bilingually (English/German) - the prerequisite is a basic knowledge of both languages and a willingness to engage with the situation. Active participation in all seminar dates and preparation of a thesis paper on a text and/or an artistic work relating to the questions of the seminar. Examination modalities will be announced in the seminar.
