Scientific bachelor seminar for teacher education
Description
In this seminar, we will examine how internalized, system-induced patterns of perception are repeated, negotiated, and/or revealed in artistic practices. The methodology that interests us here is that of working-through. The psychoanalytic term working-through refers to the transformative work on those structural conditions that constantly maintain the subject's mode of enjoyment (jouissance). This is achieved through a practice of memory, repetition, and working through.
What will particularly concern us in “Working Through I: Repetition, Elaboration, and Expansion” is the application of this psychoanalytic approach to the capitalist world of labour, as presented by philosopher Samo Tomšič in his book “The Labor of Enjoyment: Towards a Critique of Libidinal Economy”, and in particular in Chapter 6, “Psychoanalysis as Working Through Work.”
Through close-reading sessions and discussions on positions in contemporary art (John Smith, Cady Noland, Cameron Rowland, Pippa Garner, Lucy McKenzie, among others), we are interested in the antagonisms that work through the tensions of our present and do not normalize or privatize them.
Examination Modalities
- Regular attendance (absence of 2 sessions max.)
- active participation and engagement in discussions, preparation of all readings beforehand & research on one artistic works or one texts as „experts“ for the discussions in class (including ppt/high res images) (grading: 60%)
- Written examination: (grading: 40 %)
