Himmel von oben sehen – ein skopisches Regime

Leonie Licht
Institute of Studies in Art and Art Education, Art Theory
2025W, scientific seminar (SEW), 4.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S05659

Description

What does the sky look like from above?

This paradoxical question marks the center of the seminar, which will deal with a specific form of seeing: the vertical perspective. Using aesthetic material from art and popular culture, we will explore this particular view and understand it as a way of looking at the world that shapes our understanding of space and time in the past and present. Like so many before us, we will face two impossibilities: seeing the sky from above and looking at it from below.

After a general introduction, the seminar is divided into two thematic blocks. The overview provided is preliminary, as the seminar will also take into account the questions and concerns of the participants.

The seminar will be held in German.

Examination Modalities

Attendance and participation are important.

Short presentations of your own artistic/theoretical work or other artists' positions on the topic are mandatory.

Final assessment:

- Academic paper on the topic (8–15 pages) or

- Artistic essay on the topic (4–8 pages) or

- Written reflection on your own artistic/theoretical work on the topic (4–8 pages)

Comments

The goals are:

- To critically reflect on the philosophical and cultural implications of ‘looking up’ and ‘looking down’
- To establish interdisciplinary connections between technology, art, and the humanities
- To develop your own research questions on vertical perspective and perception
