Writing is a key competence in Transformation Studies. The special challenge in this particular discipline is how to “translate” complex and highly specialized topics and scientific jargon into written communication that speaks to target groups other than the ones originally intended.

In this class, students learn about the various steps involved in this process while developing their own argument and writing styles. In small hands-on exercises, we will learn how to identify and extract key claims and propositions, summarize arguments, and integrate different textual genres (e.g., research studies, scientific essays, legal documents, policy papers, and artistic and legal documents) into our own research. This will be complemented with a review of different stages of the writing process and writing strategies for specific purposes and formats. Here, special attention will be paid to English as the language of communication and writing in English for Transformation Studies (also considering the special requirements of writing in English as a second language and the role of AI in the writing process).
