Description

Expanded Publishing

This course explores expanded forms of publishing within artistic practice. Our scope ranges from traditional artist books and zines to experimental, hybrid, and performative publication formats. Here, publishing is not understood merely as the act of making something visible or public—it becomes an artistic practice in its own right, a means of creating spaces for aesthetic, political, and social positioning.

At the heart of the course lies the question: How can publishing itself become a medium of artistic expression and collective practice? We will look at both historical examples—such as from zine culture or conceptual art—as well as contemporary approaches to "expanded publishing" that deliberately engage with materiality, distribution, and alternative strategies of communication.

A special focus will be placed on the significance of analog practices in an increasingly digital world. We will reflect on why and how analog publishing formats can serve as spaces of resistance, intimacy, or subversion today—and what role they play in broader cultural and social discourse.

In the practical part of the course, we are developing a 'publiCshing machine' for public space: a hybrid of sculpture, workshop, and intervention that turns publishing quite literally into 'PubliCshing'.
