Description
Building a Compelling Art Portfolio
Description:
This course guides students through the process of developing a strong, personalized portfolio for academic, professional, and residency applications. Students will learn how to present their artistic work with clarity, coherence, and confidence—in both digital and print formats. The course includes the analysis of successful (and less effective) portfolios, practical assignments, peer feedback, and final presentations.
Learning:
By the end of this course, students will be able to:

Understand the components and structure of a strong art portfolio.

Reflect on and articulate their artistic practice through text and visuals.

Professionally photograph, edit, and document their work.

Design a portfolio layout that aligns with their artistic identity.

Understand and apply typography effectively.

Differentiate between effective and ineffective presentation strategies.

Develop a complete, submission-ready portfolio tailored to a specific application.

- Sketchbooks or notebooks
- Access to camera or smartphone
- Laptop (with InDesign, Canva, or Google Slides, Keynote, Figma and so on.)
- USB drive or online storage
- Selection of own works (minimum 8 finished pieces)

13 October 2025, 10:00–12:00 Studio 1, Transmedia Art , "Artist Identity: Statement & Bio Writing workshop: students draft their artist statement and short bio. Peer feedback in small groups."
20 October 2025, 10:00–12:00 Studio 1, Transmedia Art , "Portfolio Planning Selection of approx. 8 key works. Discussion of installation views, close-ups, and video stills. We define appropriate documentation formats (photo, video, scans, etc.) and working tools/mediums suited to each student's practice."
27 October 2025, 10:00–12:00 Studio 1, Transmedia Art , "Photographing & Documenting Work, Hands-on session on photo standards, basic editing, and Photoshop skills. Focus on accurate, high-quality documentation."
10 November 2025, 10:00–12:00 Studio 1, Transmedia Art , "Text for Artworks, Writing clear and concise descriptions for individual works. Tone, clarity, and conceptual intent."
17 November 2025, 10:00–12:00 Studio 1, Transmedia Art , "Visual Language: Layout & Typography, Introduction to layout systems, grids, typefaces, and spacing. Students share early drafts. One-on-one or group feedback sessions."
15 December 2025, 10:00–12:00 Studio 1, Transmedia Art , "Digital vs. Analog Portfolios, Exploration of formats: PDF, website, printed book. I support students individually with layout advice based on their chosen medium."
