Description

Mapping Ways of Reading

Our practices of reading are inconceivable without a basic hand-eye coordination. In the case of the book, readers do not decode text word by word, but present it to themselves page by page. Beyond the cognitive deciphering of writing, the topography of reading aims at mapping the terrain of visual culture in which knowledge is made available for autonomous appropriation through readers.

The form of the book is challenged today by possibilities opened up by digital output devices and generative language programs. By means of AI, anyone can read and summarize immense amounts of text. A game-scientific heuristic arranges the common handling of text - in books or on screens - in such a way that it becomes understandable how knowledge can emerge.

Examination Modalities

At the first meeting, we agree on a book to be read and critically discussed together.

Further literature will be announced at the preliminary discussion, e.g.
- Bickenbach, Matthias (2023): Bildschirm und Buch: Versuch über die Zukunft des Lesens. Berlin: Kadmos.
- Daston, Loraine (2024): Rules. A Short History of What We Live by
- Graeber, David (2015): Utopia of Rules
- Felsch, Philipp (2015): Der lange Sommer der Theorie: Geschichte einer Revolte 1960-1990. München: Verlag C.H.Beck.
- Müller, Lothar (2012): Weisse Magie. Die Epoche des Papiers. München: Carl Hanser Verlag.
- Pias, Claus, Joseph Vogl, Lorenz Engell, Oliver Fahle, Britta Neitzel & Lorenz Engell (Hrsg.) (2008): Kursbuch: Medienkultur. München: DtV.
