The first part of the course provides an introduction to microbiology in the context of restoration. It aims to familiarise students with the relevant microorganisms and their physiological properties. It also covers the identification and classification of microbial damage to objects, and the systematic approach to biogenic damage, including the development of prevention and treatment strategies.

The following topics will be covered in detail:
- Introduction to the field of microbiology.
The cellular composition of bacteria: ecology and diversity.
- Metabolic pathways and environmental conditions for the growth of microorganisms, and the proliferation of biofilms and coloured patinas.
- Research techniques in microbiology, including microscopy and culture, as well as a brief introduction to molecular biology.
