This seminar introduces and discusses fundamental methods and strategies of artistic research. The goal of this seminar is to enable the participants to develop their own artistic projects from the perspective of artistic research.

The introductory session provides a brief overview of key questions and concepts: What distinguishes artistic research from pure artistic production? What forms of knowledge production does it generate, and how can these be made visible or tangible?

In the course, we will develop various methodological approaches: from experimental procedures with new technologies, to performative and participatory strategies, to documentary and reflexive approaches.

One focus is on the role of digital media and immersive environments, as these are particularly suitable for testing questions of artistic research due to their proximity to processes of experimentation, simulation and expansion.

In the seminar, students develop their own project proposals in which they formulate a question of artistic research and work on it using practical, theoretical or hybrid methods. The presentation and discussion of these projects form the central theme of the course.

The aim is to develop an understanding of how artistic research mediates between aesthetic practice, theoretical reflection and technological innovation – and how this can lead to the development of independent forms of artistic knowledge.
