Ricarda Denzer
Institute of Studies in Art and Art Education, Art and Communication Practices
2025W, artistic Seminar (SEK), 2.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S03140
Description
The seminar Kunst & Prozess is taking place this semester and next semester as part of the implementation of an communicational concept for the Reichenau Memorial in collaboration with students from the University of Applied Arts and students from schools in Innsbruck.
During the Nazi era, 114 people were murdered in the Reichenau labor camp. From 1941 to 1945, around 8,500 people were imprisoned here. Inhumane living conditions, arbitrariness, and violence prevailed.
"The memorial site should develop into a ‘political place’. These are places that work, where it is negotiated what is shown and heard, what questions are asked, and where responsibility for the place itself is transferred. (...) So it is not about remembering correctly, but about opening up space for perspectives and stories."
By listening in the immediate vicinity of the former labor camp, the aim is to create a closeness to the past that can facilitate communication for and with schoolchildren.
Against the backdrop of historical contexts, based on recording experiments and exercises in deep listening and slow looking methods, we will explore the possibilities of “ear witnessing” and test both the material and immaterial aspects of mediation against the backdrop of cultures of remembrance.
Examination Modalities
Regular, committed participation (preferably throughout the 2025/26 winter semester and 2026 summer semester);
Development and presentation of an edited audio recording and digital notes on the process;
Participation in Forum KKP and the program item from the series “Dirty Pink Waters of Collectivity: ‘Dahomey’ by Matti Diop” with seminar led by Nicole Miltner;
Comments
The seminar Kunst & Prozess will take place in the coming academic year 2025/2026, partly in blocks and over two semesters.
In preparation for the site-specific work with students and pupils in March 2026, we will start with a block introduction in collaboration with the ÆSR Laboratory at the University of Applied Arts (https://aesr-lab.uni-ak.ac.at/labs). The course will then take place every second Friday. Registration online & email: ricarda.denzer@uni-ak.ac.at
