2025W, Lecture with Practical Exercises (VU), 2.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S01570

Description

Content:

Fundamentals of pattern cutting as a link between design, body and production (necessity of pattern construction, overview of pattern systems, taking measurements, measurement tables, body characteristics, body diversity and proportions),
development and construction of selected basic patterns and more complex basic models, including: skirts, culottes, trousers, jeans, tops with and without darts, sleeves, collars, details, etc.
Grading of patterns as a technical and systemic principle
Pattern development and model-related modifications based on existing basic patterns, taking into account design ideas, body shape and function
Analysis and derivation of current cut shapes based on selected references from the fashion industry
Reading, analysing and communicating cuts as a technical working and communication tool

Objective:

Good cuts form the central foundation of every collection and are both a working basis and a means of communication in contemporary fashion houses and production companies.

Students understand pattern-making as an essential step in the process between design idea and production. They learn to translate designs and technical drawings into constructive patterns and thus develop two-dimensional foundations for the production of three-dimensional models.

The course provides a solid basis for reading, developing and thinking ahead in terms of patterns and specifically prepares students for the course Pattern-making – Analogue.

Learning outcomes/skills:

Students...

...can measure body dimensions correctly and read measurement tables
...can apply rules of proportion professionally
understand the basic principles of pattern cutting and its importance in the design and production process
...construct basic patterns in a comprehensible and systematic manner
...develop and vary existing basic patterns in a targeted manner
...transfer designs and technical drawings into functional patterns
...analyse current pattern shapes and derive them from basic constructions
...use patterns as a technical communication and working tool
...perform simple gradations and understand their limitations and areas of application
...recognise the influence of material properties on pattern shape and fit
...reflect on pattern decisions with regard to design, body and production
