Various forms of painting have accompanied our civilization since the earliest times. Painted works were and still are primarily an expression of feelings and ideas, and/but their material aspect is often neglected or overlooked. For conservators and restorers, however, understanding the material nature of works of art is absolutely necessary.

Each paint always contains two basic components – colourants (pigments and/or dyes) and binders.

The aim of this course is to provide students with general knowledge of the most important historic and modern pigments and dyes and their use in various painting techniques.

During the course, the students gain knowledge about the chemical composition, properties and origin of the pigments, as well as their historical use in various painting techniques. This insight should contribute to a better understanding of restored works of art and their damage mechanisms, as well as to the correct selection of the appropriate conservation measures.

After completing the course, students' knowledge will be assessed in the form of an oral exam or a written test.

The lectures will take place in the lecture hall at Salzgries 14, 1st floor and will be held in English.
