2025W, Vorlesungen (VO), 2.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S00615
Description
Throughout the history of painting there are various painting techniques known: oil painting, gouache, tempera, watercolour, acrylic painting, etc. Every painting consists of two basic components - pigments and binders. The binders determine not only the painting technique but also many properties of paint layers. Various natural macromolecular substances have been used and many of these substances have served also as natural adhesives.
The aim of the course is to give the students a clear, systematically structured insight into the problematics of natural binders. Students will gain knowledge about the chemical composition, properties and origin of the natural binders and their historical use for a wide variety of purposes. This knowledge should lead to a better understanding of restored works of art and their damage mechanisms, as well as to the correct selection of appropriate conservation measures.
Examination Modalities
After completing the course, students' knowledge will be assessed in the form of a written test.
