Beschreibung

How can the relationship between science and art be conceived? This question presupposes that the two fields are clearly separated from each other, and accordingly, most attempts at historical reconstruction always presuppose such a separation, and thus the respective autonomy. There is a history of science and there is a history of art; what does not exist, or only exists in rudimentary form, is a history of separation and the reference to one another concealed in this separation: separation happens by referring to something and to differentiate from it precisely by that reference. Thus, every act of demarcation always already presupposes a relationship. One could therefore say that art and science are complementary to each other; they have separated from each other precisely in their relation to each other.

Based on two publications dedicated to the “invention” of science and art respectively, the course aims to develop this thesis in its historical and symbolic dimensions. From here, the aim is to gain a more precise understanding of the resulting possibilities and impossibilities of that “separated relationship” within the current debates on a science of art and an art of science.
