Data increasingly shape our everyday reality, yet their aesthetic and narrative possibilities often remain unexplored. This workshop offers an introduction to the artistic engagement with raw data – from analysis and processing to visualization. Together, we will examine how data can be used as material to create new perspectives and forms of expression.

Using open data sources such as data.gv.at, kulturpool.at or ÖNB Labs, participants will learn how to access and prepare data with intention. Fundamental concepts like data analysis and visualization will be introduced in a hands-on way, with a strong emphasis on the artistic process. We also use APIs of generative AIs to automatically process large amounts of data and extract specific patterns or content. This allows numerous queries to be made efficiently in order to visualise new correlations and control artistic transformations based on data.

Through collaborative exercises, we will develop prototypes that recontextualize the underlying data and enable alternative interpretations. The workshop is designed for students with or without prior knowledge who wish to explore data as a material for artistic exploration.
