Building on the resources, strategies and methods studied and developed in the WS courses Topics in Artistic Strategies, we propose a project-based follow-up and intensification centered around the concept, practice and medium of performance. 

The course will provide the framework for the conceptual development, contextualization, reflection, production and realization of a program of performances/readings that will take place during a one-day presentation at brut nord-est during the Angewandte festival. This is a unique opportunity for the students to be able to present the outcome of the course in front of a public. 

Through analysis, discussion, reenactment and documentation, we will investigate historical and contemporary performances that have chosen economy of means, minimalist display and formal reduction to articulate their intellectual, artistic and political commitment. Ranging from instruction pieces based on scores, to site-specific pieces measuring or marking space, to pieces performing care, to rituals of celebration, the performances we will closely look at will help us figure out how performance can work as a method to approach and understand the world differently, but also to enact other forms of working together, and to transmit embodied knowledge. Addressing the question of repetition, appropriation and reenactment, we will then collectively develop performances and/or performative works.

Students will not only learn the principles of performance, body behavior, stage presence, voice, and audience engagement but also develop the responsibility to organize a collective project. They will gain hands-on experience in every step of the process—from conceptualization and planning to execution, communication, and dismantling. 

Attendance, engagement and participation during the course will be evaluated.

Assignments as preparations before and during the course will be regularly given. They can take the shape of material preparation, scores' writing and artworks' and texts' presentations.

The involvement in the production and realization  of the collective project will be evaluated as well. 

The courses Cross-disciplinary project work - Face A and Cross-disciplinary project work - Face B are complementary. Please register for both courses.

Face A (5 ECTS) and Face B (5 ECTS) represent 10 ECTS: Students will be expected to do a substantial amount of work beyond the sessions.  

Attendance is key in these courses. Absences should be excused. 

The course is a collective endeavour – it will demand reliability, engagement, respect and mind-openness. Also, it will demand an intensive engagement in June, as we will be working on finalizing the project(s), on the rehearsals and set-up.
