Mit Museen forschen: Listening to History

Johanna Schindler
Institute of Studies in Art and Art Education, Expanded Museum Studies
2025S, scientific seminar (SEW), 4.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S05485

Description

This seminar focuses on sound as research material and means of knowledge production. We will look at recording techniques, discuss methodological questions about listening to and dealing with sensitive or contested recordings, and examine the role of the public: How is sound presented (in museums) and what do we hear and listen to in museums at all? How can questions of provenane and resitution be dealt with? How can what is perhaps not yet or no longer part of a collective memory be made audible and tangible?

This block seminar includes one session each at the Phonogrammarchiv of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and die Angewandte's Applied/Experimental Sound Research Lab.
