Auditory Cultures

Kristina Pia Hofer
Institute of Fine Arts and Media Art, Media Theory
2025S, scientific seminar (SEW), 4.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S05371

Description

The course focuses on field recording as an artistic practice and as a subject for critical academic inquiry. We will question field recordings as a practice of capture: how are they entangled with extractivist logics old and new, with binary epistemologies of ‘Nature’ and ‘Culture,’ with gendered and racialized structures and dynamics of power?

You will be able to approach these questions both from a practical, and a more studying/reading/theorizing end of things. We kick off in late March with a concert by and discussion with the Viennese musician and field recordist Robert Schwarz. We will follow with a theory reading session on May 12. For this session, I will assign two texts in March, which I will ask you to read before our class mid-May theory class. The main part of the seminar takes place from May 20-23, where you will be working with Karl Salzmann, Moritz Haberkorn and Felipe Duque of ÆSR Lab, and with Annie Goh and Mark Peter Wright of Creative Research in Sound Arts Practice (CRiSAP), University of Arts London. During two studio days at ÆSR Lab (May 21 and 21), you will acquire basic skills to handle the field recording equipment available at Angewandte, and to make your own recordings. In two workshop days with Annie Goh and Mark Peter Wright (May 22 and 23), you will work with your own recordings critically. Part of the workshop days will be a public lecture at Zentrum Fokus Forschung in the evening of May 22. You then have three weeks to work on your end of term projects: audio papers for which you’ll use the sounds you have recorded in May. You will present your audio papers in your last session with me on June 16.

Examination Modalities

During the term: Attendance, reading the assigned literature, active participation in class (during workshops, group work, discussions) and at the evening events on 27 March and 22 May

End of term: Your end of term project will be an audio paper, due and to be presented in class at June 16

Comments

Classroom languages will be English and German. The texts you'll read in preparation and the workshops will be in English.

PLEASE NOTE: The registration process is now closed, as the class has reached capacity. There is a waiting list, if you want on please write me an email.
